The current event calendar of St. Salvator Church is full of concerts, lectures, and other cultural events. If you want to experience a powerful spiritual atmosphere, attend a friendly church service and listen to the appealing sound of the organ and choir melodies, this where you should go.

Explosive political history

The foundation stone of the largest evangelical church in Prague was laid in 1611, after the freedom of religion was legalised in the Czech lands. The construction took three years. Nobleman Jáchym Ondřej Šlik bought the estate to build a church for German Lutherans. Later, he was one of the 27 executed lords at the Old Town Square. In the politically tense period before the Battle of White Mountain, the church dedicated to the Saviour (Salvator = Saviour) was a symbol of the anti-Habsburg campaign.

After the lost Battle of White Mountain, St. Salvator Church was confiscated and handed over to the Roman Catholic Church. It did not stay there for a long time either, its monastery was abolished because of Joseph II’s church reforms of 1796. St. Salvator Church was turned into a mint. In 1857, Prague Protestants got the church back for 15 thousand guldens and it has belonged to the parish congregation of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethern till today.
